New Gym Equipment

In February the Gym will be taking delivery of a new competition standard vault run and landing, a new ‘D’ Pit, and a rings frame over the pit, courtesy of a £19,000 grant to purchase the Gymnova equipment from British Gymnastics.

The grant was made in recognition of the work that Paul Hockwart - Director of Coaching - has done in 2016 to support the BG Performance Pathway Programme, including attendance at BG Squad Training, running training camps, supporting coaches’ clinics and running training and coaching open days.  Thanks for all the hard work, Paul, and a special thanks to British Gymnastics for the grant.  The new equipment will be installed during February providing even better facilities for our gymnasts.

Time to DAZzle

A huge welcome to Darren (Daz) Gerrard who has joined the coaching team at Bury as Mens Artistic Coach.

Darren was himself an International Gymnast, competing for Great Britain at 2 European and 3 World Championships.  (He even has a Wikipedia entry - - and a quick browse of YouTube will find a suspiciously ‘cowboyed’ double front vault (around the 5 minute mark) -

Daz has already started working closely with the squad gymnasts alongside Paul Hockwart and will be taking a full and active role both in the gym and at squads and competition with the boys.  Coming from the Tolworth gym in Surrey, Daz, his wife Katie, and children Anabelle and Charlie are moving to Lancashire in the next few months.  Please take the opportunity to make them feel welcome.  No pressure, Daz, but we expect to see the lads doing even better with your support in 2017.  (We’ve already heard you won’t let the boys sit down between efforts in the gym!).

Kiwis in the Gym

Some of you may have noticed a couple of new faces training with the MAG performance squad in the gym.  Will and Sam are brothers who normally train and compete in Nelson, New Zealand.  They’ve been staying in the UK for a month or so, and have had a couple of weeks training at Bury.  It’s not all been hard work; some of the senior boys are taking them to experience another athletic tradition to thank them for coming along to the gym - Nandos!

Hope you have enjoyed your time with Bury GC boys.  Safe travels home.
